St Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Dover

The Victorian bulk of St Paul's dominates a quiet corner of Dover's town centre, all red brick and Gothic Revival earnestness. Built in the 1870s, this is the sort of church that rewards a five-minute wander inside - the interior has proper period detailing, ornate ceiling work, and that particular smell of old hymn books and floor polish that takes you straight back.

Unless you're specifically into Victorian ecclesiastical architecture or Catholic history, it's not a reason to book a week's holiday. But if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Parkdean's St Margaret's Bay spot is closest at just 2.7 miles away - it's absolutely worth the short drive into Dover. Pair it with a walk along the seafront or a poke around the Dover Castle site, and you've got a decent half-day sorted.

It's free to look round, naturally, and there's no time pressure. Twenty minutes is probably enough unless you're genuinely fascinated by Victorian church design. The church keeps standard opening hours during the week, though it's worth checking locally if you're visiting a specific day. Dover itself can feel a touch weary in parts, but this building at least shows some pride in its Victorian bones. Not essential, but proper pleasant if you're in the area.
