St Oswald's C of E Church, Sheffield

Sitting quietly on the edge of Dronfield, St Oswald's is one of those churches that rewards a proper look around rather than a quick snap for social media. The building itself is medieval - all solid stone and purposeful lines - with enough detail in the stonework to keep history buffs occupied for a good twenty minutes.

Inside, there's a real sense of age. The chancel work is impressive if you care about that sort of thing, and the windows tell their own story. It's the kind of place where you actually hear the silence, which sounds daft until you're standing there.

Walkers doing circuits around Dronfield will appreciate the straightforward access, and it slots neatly into a morning before heading to Riverside Valley Camping or Secret Wood Glamping for the afternoon. Not somewhere kids will get excited about unless they're already into churches, but adults after some quiet contemplation will find exactly that.

Allow thirty minutes if you're methodical, fifteen if you're just passing through. Free entry, naturally. Best visited on a weekday morning when you've got the place to yourself - summer weekends can draw the occasional tourist group. The churchyard itself is worth a wander too, especially if you like old gravestones.
