St Olave's Church

You'll find St Olave's tucked away on Marygate, just outside York's medieval walls, and it's one of those churches that rewards the detour. The building itself is a proper mix of Norman and later medieval work - the kind of thing that rewards a slow wander round with a decent guidebook. The churchyard is peaceful enough, and from certain angles you get views back towards the city that remind you why York's location mattered so much historically.

It's genuinely worth stopping if you're already in York city centre - maybe ten minutes' walk from the Minster - but don't expect the crowds. Families with older kids who can handle a bit of church history will get something from it; younger ones might find the interior a touch dull unless they're into spotting carved details and old stonework. Solo walkers doing a loop around York's walls often pass this way, which is probably the ideal time to visit.

The place is free to access, though opening hours can be unpredictable depending on volunteer availability, so check ahead if you're making a special journey. Allow 20 to 30 minutes if you're the type to read everything, less if you're just passing through. Based in York itself or at Nurseries Caravan Park - just 2.9 miles away - you could easily work this into a morning exploring the city before heading to bigger attractions. It's the kind of spot that fills gaps in your day rather than dominating it, but that's rather its charm.
