St. Ninian's Glen Urquhart

A short walk through woodland near Drumnadrochit leads to the ruins of St. Ninian's Church, a proper piece of Highland quiet that most Loch Ness visitors completely miss. The glen itself is the draw - you're walking through native trees alongside a burn, the kind of spot where you actually hear birdsong instead of coach parties. The church itself is modest, dating back centuries, though not much remains beyond the walls and a few stones. It's the setting that gets you, really. Spend twenty minutes here and you've got something genuine, not a tick-box view.

This works best for walkers and anyone who appreciates a bit of solitude. Families with young kids might find the woodland path muddy and the actual ruins underwhelming - there's not enough "stuff" to keep under-eights entertained for long. But if you're into Scottish history or just want an easy ramble that beats queueing at the main Loch Ness tourist spots, it's absolutely worth the detour from Drumnadrochit.
