The flint and stone tower of St Nicholas's Church rises above the fields just outside Alton, a proper medieval structure that's been watching over this corner of Hampshire for centuries. The church itself is small enough that you'll take in the essentials in about twenty minutes, but if you're into ecclesiastical architecture, there's enough detail to keep you occupied longer. Medieval wall paintings, original features, the kind of thing that rewards a slow look.

It works best for people who actually enjoy wandering into old churches rather than those ticking them off a list. Walkers heading through the Alton area will find it a worthwhile detour, especially if you're already exploring the nearby countryside. Families with young children might struggle with the "be quiet in a church" requirement, though it's rarely crowded enough to matter.

Access is straightforward from Alton itself. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Wigwam Holidays is barely half a mile away, or Feather Down Manor Farm just two miles out - it's an easy morning outing before heading back for breakfast. The church is free to visit, though opening hours can be unpredictable, so do check locally or ring ahead if you're making a special journey. Worth an hour of your time if medieval churches are your thing; skip it if they're not.
