St Nicholas Recreation Ground

The paths through St Nicholas Recreation Ground are proper muddy after rain, which is exactly why locals love it. This Norfolk nature reserve sits just outside Great Yarmouth and feels a world away from the seafront chaos - genuinely quiet, with just the sound of birds and the occasional dog walker.

It's a modest spot, not vast, but the wetland areas attract plenty of wildlife. Expect reeds, open water, and the sort of light that makes you squint on clear days. Birdwatchers get the most from a visit here, particularly in spring and autumn migration seasons. You might spot marsh harriers, reed warblers, and if you're lucky, less common visitors. The walking is easy - it's flat, accessible terrain without the scrambling nonsense you get at fancier nature reserves.

Allot an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photographs or doing serious bird spotting. Kids will manage it fine but won't be massively entertained unless they're already into nature - don't expect playground equipment or visitor facilities. Free to visit, which makes it an excellent bolt-on to a holiday without adding to the budget.

If you're staying at Haven Seashore Holiday Park or Haven Caister-on-Sea, this is genuinely worth the short drive for a morning wander. Beats sitting by the caravan on dull days. The reserve offers proper breathing space before heading back to the busier attractions Great Yarmouth throws at you.
