St Nicholas, Partney

The church sits quietly at the edge of Partney village, a modest medieval building that most people driving towards Skegness would miss entirely. St Nicholas deserves a proper look though, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping or caravan parks and fancy a gentle afternoon exploring beyond the seafront.

Inside, there's a real sense of age - the chancel dates back to the 14th century, and the nave shows evidence of different building periods stacked on top of each other. The stonework is solid rather than showy, which is rather the point with these working country churches. You'll find the usual fixtures: ancient fonts, old pews, memorial plaques to local families who've been here for centuries.

It's not a destination in itself, but it works brilliantly as a leg-stretcher between The Layby Lincs or Lincolnshire Glamping and Skegness proper. The walk through the village takes maybe twenty minutes from either park, and the church visit itself won't eat more than half an hour unless you're the type who reads every inscription. Families with restless kids might find it a bit quiet and still, but older visitors and anyone interested in rural Lincolnshire architecture will find it worth the detour. Free to enter, naturally.

Timing-wise, visit during daylight hours - there's no electric lighting and the door locks when no one's about. Summer afternoons are best.
