St Nicholas' Church Feltwell

The flint-and-stone church sitting at the heart of Feltwell is one of those Norfolk buildings that stops you mid-walk. St Nicholas' rises above the village with the kind of solid permanence you don't see much anymore - medieval work dating back to the 13th century, with later additions that speak to centuries of village life passing through its doors.

Inside, the church is surprisingly light and airy for its age. The windows let proper Norfolk light flood across the nave, and there's enough carved detail and stained glass to justify a slow wander round. It's the sort of place where you can feel the weight of local history without it being heavy-handed about it.

Feltwell itself sits east of Brandon, close enough for a morning visit if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites - Willow Grove Farm or Oak Lodge are both within five kilometres. If you're doing the rounds of Norfolk's parish churches, this one's worth the detour, though it won't eat up more than an hour of your day. History types will get more out of it than casual visitors, and it's peaceful enough that you won't feel rushed.
