St Michael's Parish Church : Madeley

The church sits in the heart of Madeley, a former mining village that's now quietly proud of its industrial heritage. St Michael's is a proper working parish church - the kind where you'll find locals attending services and the doors are usually open during daylight hours. Inside, it's worth a slow wander: Victorian and earlier stonework, a decent chancel, and that particular smell of old wood and stone that takes you back centuries. The churchyard's worth ten minutes on its own if you've got the time - it's the sort of place where you can read Shropshire's past in the headstones.

This is best suited to history buffs and anyone doing a proper walking tour of Coalbrookdale and the surrounding area. If you're camped at Irongorge Camping or Worfe Camping, it's an easy detour that slots nicely into a morning exploring the village. Don't expect visitor facilities or a gift shop - this is a church, not an attraction in the modern sense.

Give yourself 20 minutes inside and another 10 in the churchyard if the weather's decent. It's free to enter, though you might want to drop something in the box. The real draw here is context: seeing how Madeley's communities lived and worshipped alongside the ironworks and potteries that shaped the whole region. On its own it's not a reason to visit Shropshire, but alongside Ironbridge and the Coalbrookdale museums just over the way, it fills out a proper half-day.
