St. Michael and All Angels

The church sits quietly on the edge of Richmond, a solid medieval structure that announces itself without fuss. St. Michael and All Angels has been standing here since the 12th century, though like most parish churches it's been patched up and altered plenty of times since then.

Inside, the light filters through tall windows onto pale stone. There's nothing showy about it - no excessive Victorian restoration, no gold leaf or marble memorials competing for attention. It's worth a visit if you're already in Richmond exploring the castle or walking along the river. Don't expect to spend more than thirty or forty minutes inside unless you're really into church architecture. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough if the weather's decent - the sort of place you'd actually want to linger rather than tick off a list.

Pairs well with a longer Richmond weekend, particularly if you're staying at Hewn Yorkshire five miles out. The market town itself has enough going on - decent pubs, the river walk - to justify a day, and this church fits naturally into that without being the main event. Families with restless kids might find it a bit sedentary, but walkers using it as a base will appreciate the whole package.
