St Michael & All Angels

The church sits right in Thirsk town centre, a proper medieval structure that's been watching over the market square for centuries. St Michael & All Angels has that solid, no-nonsense North Yorkshire feel - grey stone, decent proportions, and inside there's some genuinely interesting stuff if you're into ecclesiastical bits.

You'll find yourself drawn to the carved woodwork and the older monuments scattered about. The church has real character without being over-restored, which means it actually feels like somewhere people have worshipped for generations rather than a museum exhibit. The tower is the dominant feature from outside, and it catches the eye as you're walking round town.

Historically minded visitors will get far more from it than others, but it's worth a quick look even if you're just passing through Thirsk. Free to enter during opening hours - these things usually are - and you won't need more than thirty minutes unless you're doing serious gravestone-spotting. The location makes it easy to combine with a wander round the town shops or a pint at one of the nearby pubs.

If you're based at Pembroke Caravan Park or Camp Kátur Glamping nearby, it's an absolute doddle to pop into town for an hour. Woodland Lakes Lodges is slightly further out, but still within easy striking distance. Not a detour in itself, but absolutely worth the time when you're in the area - and you will be, because Thirsk itself is a proper market town worth exploring.
