St Michael & All Angels

The church sits on a ridge above Chepstow, and on a clear day you can see the Wye Valley unfold below the churchyard. St Michael & All Angels isn't particularly famous, which is rather the point - it's a proper working parish church without the crowds or the gift shop.

Inside, the medieval stonework does the talking. Narrow windows, a small chancel, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. There's some decent carved detail if you're into that sort of thing, though nothing that'll stop you in your tracks. The real draw is the setting itself - the graveyard's scattered with old headstones, and the views back across the valley justify the walk up.

This works best if you're already in the area exploring the Wye Valley or staying at one of the local glamping spots like Penhein. It'll take you thirty minutes to have a proper look around, and the churchyard's pleasant for sitting with a coffee afterwards. The walk from Chepstow isn't trivial - you're looking at a decent hill - so factor that in unless you're driving right to the gate.

Solo walkers and history types will get more from it than families with small children, if I'm honest. There's no playground, no cafe, no reason to linger longer than an hour. But if you're the sort who enjoys quiet corners and doesn't need everything signposted, it's genuinely worth the detour.
