St Mary's Triangle

The Triangle sits tucked between Leicester's urban sprawl and the countryside proper - a proper little oasis if you're willing to nose around. It's a nature reserve that actually feels like something is happening there, not just a patch of overgrown land with a sign. Wetland pools, grassland, scrubby bits - all working as they should to attract wildlife. You'll see dragonflies in summer, water birds year-round if you're quiet about it.

Walking trails loop through, nothing strenuous, though your shoes will get damp if there's been rain. Allow an hour if you're just having a mooch, longer if you've brought binoculars and a bird identification book. Families won't find it thrilling - there's no café, no playground, no adventure park nonsense - but older kids who actually care about wildlife will learn something proper here.

It's the sort of place that matters more in spring when migration's on, or early autumn when the dragonflies are mental. Winter's quieter but the structure's still there if you're into habitat management and that side of things.

If you're staying at Fox's Furrow just down the road, this is the kind of walk you'd do before breakfast or late afternoon without it taking the entire day. Close enough to Leicester if you need town things, but far enough out that it feels genuinely separate. Free, as it should be. No fancy facilities, no fees - just you, the wetland, and whatever birds feel like showing up.
