St Mary's

The church sits in the centre of Wedmore, a proper Somerset village where the high street still feels like somewhere people actually live. St Mary's is a medieval parish church - all buttresses and pointed windows - that you'd walk past dozens of times if you weren't paying attention, which would be a shame.

Inside, there's genuine craftsmanship: carved roof beams, the sort of stonework that took someone months to complete. The church has that particular quiet that old buildings hold, the kind where you can hear yourself think. It's the type of place history enthusiasts genuinely enjoy - no razzmatazz, just centuries of local worship sitting comfortably in the stone.

Admission is free (you'll find a donations box), and there's no prescribed visiting hours - it's usually accessible during daylight if the door isn't locked. Realistically, allow 20-30 minutes unless you're deep into ecclesiastical architecture, in which case you could happily spend longer photographing details.

It works well as part of a broader Wedmore exploration rather than a standalone destination. Stay at Laurel Farm Glamping or Esme's Escape nearby, and combine this with a walk around the village itself - there's a decent amount of character to absorb. Moorhouse Campsite is also within striking distance if you want to base yourself in the area for a few days exploring the Levels and surrounding countryside. The church is fundamentally what it is - a beautiful, honest medieval building - and that's precisely why it's worth the detour.
