St Mary's Parish Church

The church sits right in the heart of Baldock, a solid medieval structure that's been watching over the town for centuries. St Mary's has that proper old-world feel - the kind of place where you half expect to bump into someone in a cassock round every corner. Inside, there's real character: decent stonework, some decent stained glass if the light's right, and the sort of quiet that makes you want to whisper even if there's nobody else about.

It's worth a look if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Baldock Park Homes is barely half a mile away, and Radwell Lake campsite not much further. Twenty minutes here won't feel wasted, though don't expect to spend hours unless you're genuinely into medieval church architecture. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a wander, and it gives you a proper sense of Baldock's history without the tourist circus you'd get at the big-name attractions.

Best visited during daylight hours when the interior's actually visible. Free entry, as these things usually are. If you're cycling or walking round Baldock between campsite visits, it's an easy detour. Families with restless kids might find it a bit static, but if you've got history enthusiasts in tow or just want thirty minutes of peaceful contemplation, St Mary's does the job.
