St Mary’s Lydiard Tregoze

The moment you step into St Mary's, you're confronted with one of those rare churches that actually stops you dead. Lydiard Tregoze sits just outside Swindon, and it's the sort of place locals seem to keep quiet about - which is criminal because the interior is absolutely extraordinary.

What makes it special is how untouched it feels. The church dates back centuries, but what really grabs you are the monuments and memorials scattered throughout - particularly the elaborate tombs of the St John family, who owned the house next door. There's a Golden Cavalier monument that's genuinely striking, all gilded and theatrical in a way you rarely see preserved like this. The stained glass is good too, though some of it's Victorian restoration work rather than original medieval stuff.

You can wander round at your own pace, and it's genuinely free to visit. Allow a solid hour if you're actually interested in the monuments and the bits of history on display - the church keeps some excellent information boards that explain what you're looking at. It's not a massive undertaking, so it works well as a half-morning stop if you're camping nearby at Park Farm.

Families with older kids might get something out of it, but younger ones could struggle unless you're really into old stones and tombs. Walkers and history types will find it properly worthwhile. The real charm is that it doesn't feel overrun or overly restored - it's just a working parish church that happens to contain some genuinely fine medieval and post-medieval art.
