St Mary's Church, Thornham Parva

The church sits tucked away down a Suffolk lane, and honestly, you'd miss it if you weren't paying attention. St Mary's in Thornham Parva is tiny - the sort of place where you can feel the weight of centuries the moment you push open the door. What catches you straight away is the rood screen, a proper treasure from around 1500 that's survived when so many others didn't. The painted saints stare down at you with an intensity that's almost uncomfortable, their colours still vivid after half a millennium.

It's a quiet visit. Maybe twenty minutes if you're thorough, longer if you sit for a bit and let the stillness do its work. There's no rushing here, no queues, no gift shop nonsense. Just you, the old stone, and the remarkable survival of medieval art. History buffs and anyone with an actual interest in medieval churches will find this genuinely moving. Kids might fidget unless they're into that sort of thing.

The location - a mile or so east of Eye - means it works well as a detour if you're staying at Hill Farm Suffolk nearby. Free to visit, no set hours that I'm aware of, though you'll want to check locally before making a special trip. The lane gets you away from the main tourist trail entirely, which is precisely why it's worth the bother. You won't find crowds here, just authenticity.
