St. Mary's Church, Stalham

The church sits right in Stalham village, a proper Norfolk landmark that's been there since medieval times. Walk in and you're immediately struck by the scale of the place - it's one of those impressive parish churches that tells you this was once a much wealthier settlement than it looks today.

Inside, the windows are the real draw. There's some decent medieval glass if the light's right, and the overall space has that calm, slightly austere feel you get in East Anglian churches. The craftsmanship in the woodwork is worth a closer look, especially if you're into that sort of thing. Don't expect anything flashy - this is understated Norfolk elegance.

It works well as a stop between other Norfolk attractions. You won't spend more than twenty minutes inside unless you're genuinely interested in ecclesiastical architecture, so it's ideal for breaking up a drive rather than planning a whole morning around it. The village itself is low-key, which some will find peaceful and others might find a bit sleepy.

If you're staying at Waxham Sands Holiday Park just down the road, it's an easy detour worth making if you're exploring the area anyway. Bring a good camera if the weather's decent - the exterior can be lovely in the right light. Opening times and admission weren't clear when I visited, so phone ahead to be sure.
