St Marys Church

St Mary's Church sits right in Chepstow town centre, a proper medieval structure that catches most visitors off guard with its scale. The church dates back to the 13th century, though it's been rebuilt and fiddled with ever since - which is exactly what makes it interesting rather than a sterile museum piece.

Inside, there's some genuine medieval stonework and stained glass worth a look, plus the usual Victorian additions that somehow work. The churchyard itself is peaceful, which counts for something when you're surrounded by the bustle of Chepstow's high street. It takes perhaps thirty minutes to nose around properly, longer if you're into brass rubbings or reading old memorials.

Historically minded types will get more from this than families with small kids, to be honest. There's no playground and it's confined - under-fives will be restless within ten minutes. That said, it's free, it's central, and if you're already in town visiting Chepstow Castle, popping in makes sense.
