St Mary's Church Feltwell

The church sits on Feltwell's high street, a substantial flint-and-stone building that stops you mid-walk through the village. St Mary's is mostly 14th century, with that particular East Anglian solidity - thick walls, a proper tower, the kind of place that's weathered five hundred years without fussing about it.

Inside, the real draw is the rood screen. It's one of those pieces of medieval craftsmanship that makes you understand why people fought so hard to preserve them during the Reformation. The detail is remarkable if you take time to look. There's also a rather fine font, and the usual Norfolk treasure of misericords that reward close inspection if you're the sort who crouches in pews hunting for carvings.

It's free to visit, as most rural churches are, and you can usually get in during daylight hours - though it pays to check locally if you're making a specific journey. Allow half an hour if you're thorough, less if you just want a quick look.

Feltwell itself is quiet, a working village rather than a tourist draw, which is honestly part of the appeal. Brandon's only a few miles south if you need supplies or a proper café. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Willow Grove Farm or Oak Lodge are both within easy reach - then St Mary's makes a decent leg-stretcher between the parks. It's not the kind of church that demands a pilgrimage, but it's worth twenty minutes if you're passing through.
