St Mary's Church

The Church of St Mary in Dunbar is one of those red-sandstone buildings that stops you mid-stride when you turn the corner. You'll find it right in the heart of town, impossible to miss with its sturdy tower and weathered stone walls that have seen centuries pass. Inside, it's properly atmospheric - high ceilings, proper pews, stained glass that catches the light at the right time of day. The church has genuine medieval bones underneath all the Victorian tinkering, which appeals to history types far more than casual visitors.

Who gets most from it? Anyone with even passing interest in Scottish ecclesiastical architecture, really. The detail work rewards a slow wander rather than a quick snap for Instagram. The churchyard itself is worth a lingering look - there are some fine old stones back there if graveyards are your thing.

Free to visit, no fancy opening hours nonsense as far as I could tell. Allow 20 minutes if you're just passing through, longer if you're the sort who reads every plaque. It's not a world-changer, but it's the kind of place that makes sense to slot in when you're exploring Dunbar's town centre proper.

If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the coast, it's barely ten minutes' drive - sensible to catch it while you're in town grabbing provisions. Not a destination in itself, but a solid stop on a Scottish Lowlands itinerary.
