St Mary's Abbey

The ruins of St Mary's Abbey sit quietly on the outskirts of York, a sobering reminder of what Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries actually cost. What remains - largely the stone walls of what was once one of northern England's richest Benedictine foundations - tells the story far better than any plaque could manage.

Walking through here, you're looking at fragments from the 11th century onwards. The scale of it hits you: this wasn't some modest chapel, but a sprawling complex that would have housed dozens of monks and supported the entire local economy. The abbey church itself is largely gone, but the guest house, parts of the dormitory, and defensive walls give enough away.
