St Mary the Virgin, Weeting

A proper flint-knapped church sitting alone in the Norfolk borderlands, St Mary the Virgin has the kind of quiet dignity you don't see much anymore. The building itself is a knockout - 15th-century flint work on the outside, all those pale grey stones fitted together like a jigsaw, with a sturdy tower that's become something of a landmark around Weeting.

Inside, it's genuinely atmospheric without being gloomy. The nave has decent medieval features if you know what to look for, and the whole place has that unhurried feel of a church that's been doing its job for five centuries without fussing about it. You're looking at maybe 20 minutes if you're thorough, longer if you've got proper architectural interests.

This works best as a quiet pause during a Norfolk walk rather than a destination in itself. The village of Weeting is tiny - Brandon's your nearest proper town, about three miles south - so you'd really want to pair it with the surrounding countryside or stay at one of the local glamping spots. Willow Grove Farm is closest at 4.6 miles, which would give you genuine peace and quiet without being too isolated.

Come in morning light if you can; the flint absolutely glows. It's free, there's usually access, and it's the sort of place that reminds you why these small parish churches matter. No queue, no faffing about - just good Norman and medieval stonework standing in a field.
