St Mary The Virgin (Godmanchester Parish Church)

The church sits on a gentle rise in Godmanchester, just across the river from Huntingdon, and you can't miss the tower once you're in the village centre. St Mary the Virgin is proper medieval - 14th and 15th century mostly - and the sort of place where you actually feel the weight of centuries the moment you step inside.

The interior does the job well. Fan vaulting in the chancel, decent stained glass, and that hushed atmosphere that only old parish churches manage. There's a surprising amount to look at if you take time - carved misericords, various monuments, the usual mix of Cambridgeshire stone and timber work. It won't take hours, but a solid twenty minutes or half an hour is worth allowing, longer if you're into medieval architecture.

This works best as a stop during a broader walk around Godmanchester itself rather than a destination journey. The village is tight and walkable, and the church sits naturally into a morning or afternoon amble. If you're based at Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club a few miles north - decent spot for a quieter Cambridgeshire break - it's an easy diversion on the way back from Huntingdon town.

Historically minded visitors and anyone who likes working parish churches will get something from it. Kids might find it a bit austere unless they're the type who actually engage with old buildings. Free to enter as far as I can establish, though donations are obviously welcomed.
