St Mary the Virgin Church, Flitcham

The church sits quietly off the lane in Flitcham, just east of Grimston, and it's one of those places that rewards the small detour. St Mary the Virgin is a proper Norfolk parish church - medieval bones with a tower that's seen centuries pass - and inside there's enough detail to keep anyone interested in church architecture properly absorbed for half an hour or more.

The chancel's where you'll spot the real treasures: some decent medieval windows and the kind of stone work that makes you understand why people bothered building these places to last. It's not a showstopper in the way some Norfolk churches are, but that's rather the point. This is the real thing - a working church that's been part of village life since the 13th century, not a museum piece.

Walkers will find it works well as a stop on a bigger route around the area. Grimston's close enough for coffee, and if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Happy Valley's glamping setup is just 2.6 miles away, or Pinecones caravan park at 3.7 miles - you could easily slip here between other activities. It's free to visit and takes about 20 minutes to properly look round, longer if the door's open and you want to sit for a bit.

Not every church needs to be a destination in itself. But if you're already in Norfolk and you like old buildings, it's well worth knowing about. Quiet spots like this beat the crowds any day.
