St Mary & St Michael Trumpington

The church sits on a gentle rise in Trumpington, just south of Cambridge, its tower visible across the fields long before you reach the village itself. St Mary & St Michael is one of those proper medieval buildings that feels genuinely lived-in rather than preserved, which makes all the difference.

Inside, the nave stretches back with that particular quiet that only old churches manage. The windows are mostly Victorian replacements, but there's enough original medieval work - particularly in the chancel - to ground you in several centuries of worship. The brass rubbings are excellent if you've got kids in tow; there's something about letting them do a rubbing that makes history suddenly real rather than just old stones.

It's worth a dedicated visit if you're into medieval architecture or church brasses, though not a "drive across Cambridge for" sort of place. More likely you'll find yourself here as part of a walk from the village towards the Mill or while exploring the quieter corners of Cambridge's green belt. The church is free to wander through, and you can usually manage a good half-hour inside without feeling rushed.

Pair it with a longer walk through the surrounding farmland, which is genuinely lovely in late spring. The village itself is small but functional; the real draw is the building itself and what it tells you about medieval parish life.
