St Mary Magdelene Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Morpeth, its stone walls weathered by centuries of Northumberland wind. St Mary Magdalene is a proper medieval building - the kind where you can run your hand along carved stone that's been doing the same job since the 1300s. Inside, the light comes through tall windows in a way that makes you understand why people bothered building these places at all.

It's worth an hour if you're into church architecture and the odd bit of local history. The chancel has some nice details if you know what to look for, and there's something quite moving about standing in a space where the same rituals have repeated for seven centuries. Don't come expecting grandeur or theatrical moments - this is understated, English medieval, the kind of building that whispers rather than shouts.

Families with very young children might find it a touch boring, but older kids who aren't completely church-averse could get something from it. Walking types heading out from Morpeth will pass near enough to make it an easy addition to a ramble. The free admission (which it almost certainly is, like most parish churches) means there's no risk in stopping by.

If you're staying at Hillside Huts & Cabins just down the road, it's an easy detour on the way into town - no more than a five-minute diversion. It's not the kind of place that'll consume your afternoon, but it's exactly the sort of quiet stop that makes a park holiday feel properly rooted in the place you're visiting.
