St Mary Magdalene, Quatford

The church sits quietly on a bend in the road near Bridgnorth, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. St Mary Magdalene is a proper medieval structure - the kind of place where you can actually feel the weight of centuries, rather than just read about it on a plaque.

Inside, the church is surprisingly intimate. The Norman architecture speaks volumes about what mattered to people in the 12th century, and the later additions show how communities evolved and invested in their places of worship over hundreds of years. It's the sort of building that rewards a slow walk around - notice the windows, the stonework, the way light falls differently depending on the time of day.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Stanmore Hall Touring Park just down the road. It's a five-minute stroll, which makes it an excellent excuse to get off-site without heading into Bridgnorth proper. You won't need more than 30 minutes here unless you're genuinely interested in medieval church architecture, which makes it perfect for breaking up a caravan day.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it - families with restless kids might find it a bit quiet. Go mid-morning on a weekday and you'll likely have the place to yourself. The churchyard is pleasant enough for a wander too, if you've got time to kill before heading back to the park.
