St Mary, Chilton

The Church of St Mary in Chilton is a proper medieval survivor, sitting quietly in the Suffolk countryside east of Sudbury. It's a small parish church - the sort of place where you'll find yourself alone with the medieval stonework and the smell of old wood. The interior rewards a careful look: there's some decent 15th-century work here, and the feeling of authenticity that comes from a church that's been doing the same job for about 700 years.

This isn't a showpiece attraction with guides and gift shops. You turn up, find it open or get a key from the keyholder (village churches often work this way), and you have a quiet half-hour poking about. Families will find it peaceful rather than engaging - there's no interactive anything, no children's activities. But if you're walking the Suffolk lanes or interested in how medieval churches actually function, it's worth a detour.

Allow 30 minutes maximum, longer if you're serious about church architecture. The setting is lovely - proper countryside, the sort of walk that justifies a bit of aimless rambling. If you're staying at Polstead Country Park about six miles away, St Mary makes a gentle morning outing before or after a park-based day. Go on a sunny afternoon when the light comes through properly. September and October are particularly nice - fewer tourists, softer light, and the lanes are still walkable.
