The church sits right on Wareham's medieval walls - literally built into them - which is precisely what makes it worth a detour. St Martin's-on-The-Walls isn't some grand cathedral; it's modest, even slightly cramped, but that's entirely the point. You're standing in a structure that's been part of these Anglo-Saxon defences for nearly a thousand years, and you can feel it.

Inside, the space is intimate. Saxon stonework runs through the walls, and the whole atmosphere speaks of genuine age rather than restoration theatre. History types will spend a good twenty minutes picking apart the architecture; families with younger kids might manage ten. It's free to visit, though opening hours aren't always predictable - this isn't a tourist machine.

Wareham itself is worth half a day. The walls form a rough square around the old town centre, and walking them gives you proper medieval town planning. If you're camping at Hunter's Moon or Wareham Forest Tourist Park - both within three miles - this is an easy leg-stretch visit. Park the van, walk the walls, duck into the church, grab a coffee in town.

The real win is combining it with a broader Wareham explore. The River Frome runs through town, the pubs are decent, and you're perfectly positioned for pushing into the Purbeck Hills or down towards Poole Harbour. St Martin's alone won't occupy your morning, but as part of a proper town visit, it slots in beautifully.
