St Mark's Church, Winshill

The church sits on a gentle rise overlooking the Trent Valley, a solid Victorian rebuild of something much older. St Mark's is the kind of place you stumble upon while walking between Winshill and Burton-upon-Trent rather than travel miles to visit, but it's worth a proper look if you're in the area.

Inside, it's all proper Victorian restoration work - red brick exterior, decent stained glass, and the sort of peaceful quiet you only get in country churches on a Tuesday afternoon. The graveyard's interesting too, with some readable stones that actually tell you something about the people buried there. Don't expect architectural fireworks or famous tombs. This is a working parish church, not a tourist attraction masquerading as one.

Historically minded types will appreciate the medieval foundations, but children will get restless in about ten minutes unless they're the sort who like rubbing pencil on old stones. Free to visit, naturally. Allow twenty minutes unless you're properly into Victorian ecclesiastical architecture, in which case you'll want longer.

If you're based at Broadleaves Glamping or Peake's Retreats - both excellent spots close by - it makes a decent stretch of the legs between the caravan and a pub lunch. The Trent Valley walk passes nearby, so you could tack it onto something longer. It's not a reason to visit Leicestershire on its own, but it's a solid full stop to a morning's ramble rather than a wasted detour.
