The churchyard at St Leonard's sits quietly on the edge of Shaftesbury, a place most visitors drive past without noticing. That's precisely why it's worth stopping for. The church itself is medieval - proper old, with that solid Norman feel you get from buildings that have simply refused to go anywhere for eight centuries. Inside, the stone pillars and arches have that worn smoothness that comes from centuries of people running their hands along them.

It's the sort of spot that appeals to history types more than anyone else, though walkers tackling the footpaths around Shaftesbury will find it a natural pause point.
