St Lawrence, Kirby Sigston

The church sits quietly in the village of Kirby Sigston, just a short drive south of Northallerton, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than seek out deliberately. St Lawrence is a modest medieval parish church with real character - the kind that reveals itself slowly as you walk around it. Inside, there's a decent Norman font and some proper old stonework that speaks to centuries of village life passing through these doors.

It's not a showstopper in the way Durham Cathedral is, but that's rather the point. This is the real thing - a working village church where actual people worship, not a museum piece. If you're based at Cote Ghyll Caravan Park or Hillside Caravan Park - both strong options in the area - it's easily combined with a ramble through the surrounding countryside. The village itself is tiny, so don't expect shops or cafes. Admission appears to be free, though it's worth checking ahead if you're making a specific journey. Best visited on a clear day when the light catches the old stone properly.
