St. Lawrence Church

The church sits on a rise just outside Leiston, its flint and stone tower visible for miles across the Suffolk flatlands. St. Lawrence is properly medieval - the sort of place where you can run your fingers along Norman arches and feel actual centuries under your palm. The interior's got that particular smell of old wood and hymn books that either settles you immediately or makes you slightly claustrophobic. Either way, it's worth twenty minutes to look at the surviving medieval wall paintings and the quiet, unhurried way the light falls through the windows.

It's the kind of visit that appeals most to walkers and history types rather than families with restless kids - there's not much interactive stuff, and it's a proper church rather than a museum. The real value is in the atmosphere and the chance to poke around a building that's been doing the same job since the 1100s without much fussing about. Free to wander in during daylight hours, as far as I could tell.

If you're staying at Beach View Holiday Park up the road - which actually deserves its 4.8 rating - St. Lawrence makes a decent morning detour before heading to the coast. Cakes & Ale is closer but less impressive as a base. The church itself isn't a draw on its own, but combined with Leiston's quieter charm and the nearby countryside walks, it fits nicely into a Suffolk weekend without eating up your schedule.
