The stone church sits quietly on the outskirts of Ballater, unassuming but genuinely worth the short detour if you're staying in the area. St Kentigern's is a proper Highland church - solid, unpretentious, with that particular Scottish granite solidity that makes you believe it'll outlast us all. The interior is simple rather than grand, which somehow makes it feel more authentic than the showier ecclesiastical attractions elsewhere.

This is the sort of place that appeals to walkers and history types rather than families after a big day out. You're looking at maybe twenty minutes inside, half an hour if you're reading every inscription. The churchyard is pleasant for a quiet wander, and there's something rather moving about the older graves, especially if you're interested in local history and how far back these communities go.

It's free to visit, though opening hours seem variable - worth ringing ahead or checking when you arrive in Ballater. The church sits well within a caravan park holiday, particularly if you're based at Ballater Caravan Park just down the road. Howe of Torbeg and Firbank Park are also close enough that St Kentigern's makes a sensible stop during a morning walk around the village before heading elsewhere in Royal Deeside.

Don't expect to be overwhelmed, but do expect genuine quietness and a real sense of place. That's increasingly rare.
