St Katharine

The little church sits quietly on the Essex lanes east of Braintree, the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't specifically looking for it. St Katharine is genuinely old - medieval bones with later additions - and inside it's properly atmospheric in that way English village churches often are, all worn stone and light slanting through old glass.

What you get here is straightforward: a chance to step back and sit in a space where people have worshipped for centuries. There's no gift shop, no interpretation panels, no faffing about. If you're into church architecture or local history, it's worth the detour. If you're hoping for dramatic monuments or famous burials, you'll be disappointed. The appeal is the quietness of it, really - the sense that this small building has just carried on doing its job for longer than most things around it.

It works well as part of a walking route if you're staying at Hill Farm campsite nearby rather than as a destination in itself. Give it half an hour, maybe longer if you're the type to sit in churches for reflection. Come on a weekday morning when it's properly peaceful. Families with very young children might find it a bit dull - there's nothing interactive about it - but older kids interested in history will get something from it.
