St Johns Stretton

The church sits quietly on the edge of Stretton village, about three miles south of Brewood, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper look rather than a quick photo and move on. St Johns is a medieval church with a tower that speaks to centuries of village life - the kind of building where you can still feel the weight of time in its stonework.

Inside, there's decent medieval carpentry, some proper old glass if you're into that sort of thing, and the usual accumulation of brass plates and memorials that tells the story of who mattered locally. It's not a showstopper like some of the bigger Staffordshire churches, but it has character. The graveyard's worth a wander too - older stones tucked under yew trees, the sort of place where you can lose twenty minutes reading names and dates.

This works best for church enthusiasts and walkers who are genuinely interested in local history rather than ticking boxes. Kids will get restless after ten minutes unless they're already into that kind of thing. You're looking at about half an hour comfortably, perhaps longer if you're sketching or photographing.

If you're staying at Oakland Holiday Park nearby - which is excellent - it's a perfectly reasonable detour on a country drive. Pair it with exploring Brewood itself or a longer walk through the surrounding farmland. Free to visit, obviously, being a village church, though the doors aren't always open so you might need to hunt down a keyholder locally.
