St John's, Stanwick

The church itself is compact and unassuming from the outside, sitting quietly in the village of Stanwick just south of Richmond. What catches you inside, though, is the Norman stonework - proper medieval stuff that makes you realise how old these bones really are. The chancel arch is the standout feature, all rounded and solid, the kind of thing that's been there since the 1100s while everything else around it got knocked down or rebuilt.

It's the sort of place history enthusiasts will linger over, running their hands along the stone and trying to imagine who worshipped here eight centuries ago. Families with younger kids might find it a bit slow unless someone's got a decent eye for pointing out the old bits. Give yourself twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're the type to read every inscription and wonder about the people buried underneath.

Stanwick sits in prime walking country, and if you're based at Hewn Yorkshire just down the road, St John's makes a natural detour on a ramble. The village itself is barely a thing - just a handful of houses and the church - so you're not stopping for lunch or a browse. But that's rather the point. It's genuine and unspoilt, the kind of place that reminds you why small churches matter to the landscape around Richmond. Free to look round, naturally, and open whenever the door's unlocked.
