The Somerset Levels can feel pretty bleak if you're not paying attention, but St John's Park near Burnham-on-Sea is where that flat landscape actually works in its favour. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you might spot marsh harriers or hear bitterns booming if you time it right, particularly over winter. The park itself is accessible and free to wander, with the main draw being open water and reedbed habitat that feels genuinely wild for somewhere so close to a seaside town.

This is absolutely a place for serious birdwatchers and anyone who gets genuinely excited about wetland ecology. Casual visitors might find it a bit... well, quiet. There's no café, no playground, no obvious facilities - just marshland and the sounds of water and birds. Bring binoculars and patience. The best light is early morning, and honestly, late afternoon in winter when the low sun turns everything golden is when it properly clicks.

Allow two to three hours if you're taking it seriously, though you can do a shorter loop in forty minutes. Access is free, and you can turn it into a decent circuit walk if the weather's cooperative. Coming from Golden Sands or Yellow Sands Holiday Park, you're barely ten minutes' drive away, which makes it a proper option for a rainy morning when the kids have had enough of the beach. Just don't expect them to be glued to the experience unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy spotting wildlife.
