St. John's Church of Ireland

The Church of Ireland building sits on the main street in Hillsborough, a proper Georgian town that feels like someone's frozen it in the 1750s. St. John's is the focal point - a substantial stone structure that dates back to 1773 and commands respect without being showy about it. Inside, the light through the windows and the wooden galleries give it an intimate feel despite the decent size. The chancel is genuinely impressive, and if you're into ecclesiastical architecture, you'll spend a good twenty minutes spotting the details. Most visitors pop in for ten minutes, though, and that's fine too.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow walk around Hillsborough rather than being a destination in itself. The town has proper shops, a decent pub or two, and the castle ruins nearby if you've got time. Families won't find it gripping unless someone's genuinely interested in church interiors - kids tend to get restless after a few minutes. But walkers using Lakeside View Caravan Park or Slieve Croob Camping as a base will find it a natural stop on a morning's exploration of the town. There's no entry charge and no fixed hours you need to worry about, though like most Church of Ireland buildings, visiting during daylight hours makes obvious sense. Go on a quiet weekday if you can. The brass and memorials are worth a proper look, and you won't be fighting crowds.
