St John the Evangelist's Church, Carlton in Lindrick

The church sits quietly in Carlton in Lindrick, a village just outside Worksop, and it's the sort of place that rewards a gentle detour if you're staying at one of the nearby parks. St John the Evangelist's is a proper medieval church - we're talking 12th century foundations, though what you see today has been added to and modified over the centuries. Walk inside and you get that immediate sense of age: low stone arches, worn flagstones, and the kind of stillness that makes you speak quietly without being asked to.

The interior has some decent medieval features if you know what to look for - the font is particularly good, and there are fragments of old stonework that speak to serious craftsmanship. It's not a showstopper like some of the grander churches in the region, but that's rather the point. This feels like a real village church, still in use, still part of the community. The big draw nearby is National Trust Clumber Park itself, just six miles away, so this works as a quieter cultural stop before or after tackling that. Worth the visit if you're in the area, though not worth a special trip from further afield.
