St John the Baptist's Church, Winster

The church sits bang in the middle of Winster village, a proper limestone settlement about four miles south of Matlock. St John the Baptist's is one of those broad, confident medieval churches that tells you this place was doing rather well once upon a time - which it was, thanks to lead and fluorspar mining in the hills roundabout.

Inside, the space feels generous and light. You'll spot some decent medieval work, including carved roof bosses that reward a good neck-crane, and the church has managed to hold onto enough original features to feel authentic without tipping into museum territory. The tower's a sturdy bit of work too.

This isn't a destination in itself - you won't need more than thirty or forty minutes - but it's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're rambling through the White Peak. The village itself is lovely for a wander, with stone cottages and a working pub or two. History types will get something from the mining connections; families breaking up a walk won't feel shortchanged.

If you're staying at Newhaven Holiday Park or Lathkill Wild Campsite, both within easy reach, Winster makes a natural half-day loop with the surrounding dales. Rivendale Lodge Retreat's a touch further but still reasonable. Pop in when you're exploring the Matlock area properly - don't plan a trip around it, but don't skip it either.
