St John the Baptist, Little Maplestead

The moment you push open the wooden door at Little Maplestead, you're in a space that feels genuinely medieval. St John the Baptist is a proper oddity - a round church, one of only a handful in England, built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 12th century. The circular nave is compact, almost intimate, with round pillars supporting a low vault. It's the sort of place where you can almost hear the centuries settle around you.

Walking the perimeter takes ten minutes flat. The stonework is worn but honest, and there's something rather moving about how little has changed here. Historians and anyone with a soft spot for Romanesque architecture will spend a good hour picking over the details - the carved capitals, the way the light falls through the east window. Families with younger children might find it brief but atmospheric; it's small enough that restless legs won't be a problem, yet strange enough to hold attention.

The village itself is barely a village, which is rather the point. Halstead, a few miles west, is where you'll find proper amenities if needed. If you're based at Woodchests Glamping just down the road, this makes for an easy morning detour before heading to Gosfield Lake Resort for something with a bit more going on. Admission details aren't widely publicised online, so ring ahead or turn up and knock - these old churches often operate on trust and goodwill.
