St John The Baptist Church, Metfield

The church sits quietly in the village of Metfield, a few miles east of Halesworth, with that particular Suffolk stillness that makes you slow down whether you want to or not. St John the Baptist is a proper medieval job - 15th century mostly, with the kind of flint and stone construction you see dotted across Norfolk and Suffolk if you know where to look. The interior's worth the stop if you're into that sort of thing: decent medieval woodwork, old fixtures that haven't been over-restored, and the sort of light that only comes through ancient windows.

It's not a showstopper. You're not going to spend hours here, and that's fine. Most people will get what they came for in twenty minutes or so. History types and church hunters will find it satisfying enough - the real appeal is doing a small circuit of several churches round Halesworth in a morning, rather than this one in isolation. Families with restless kids might find it a bit much; there's not a great deal to do beyond looking.

Free to visit, as most parish churches are. Best to check locally for opening times if you're making a special trip, though these smaller village churches are often accessible during daylight hours. If you're camping at Green Haven or The Croft nearby, this makes a gentle afternoon walk from base - the sort of thing that fills a couple of hours without demanding much effort. It slots nicely into a broader tour of the area's religious architecture rather than standing alone as a destination.
