St Jerome's Church, Llangwm

St Jerome's Church sits quietly in Llangwm, a few miles north of Chepstow, and it's one of those places you'd walk straight past if you weren't looking for it. The church itself is modest - a small medieval structure that's been standing since the 13th century, which is properly impressive given the state of things. What makes it worth the minor detour from Chepstow is the setting. It's perched above the Wye Valley, and on a clear day the views across the river are genuinely excellent.

Inside, it's stripped of the Victorian clutter you find in many Welsh churches. The stonework is genuine, the windows are straightforward, and there's a real sense of age about the place - no fancy restoration nonsense. The churchyard's worth a wander too, with some interesting old gravestones if you're into that sort of thing.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it, though it's not a destination that demands hours of your time. Allow thirty minutes, maybe forty-five if you're photographing the views. It's free to visit, which helps. The road down is narrow and a bit of a squeeze, so go early in the day if you want parking space.
