St James the Great Church, Stonesfield

The church sits on a gentle rise in Stonesfield village, about three miles south of Chipping Norton, and it's one of those places you'll find yourself drawn to even if you're not particularly keen on ecclesiastical architecture. The stone is that warm honey-coloured Cotswold variety that catches the light differently depending on the time of day, and the churchyard is properly peaceful - the kind of spot where you actually notice birdsong.

Inside, St James the Great feels lived-in rather than museum-like. The roof timbers are excellent if you're into medieval carpentry, and there's enough detail in the stonework and fixtures to keep you occupied for twenty minutes or so. It's the sort of church where locals still actually worship, which gives it a different atmosphere from the tourist-heavy ones.

You're looking at thirty minutes maximum here, unless you're a serious church historian willing to spend time with the monuments and registers. Families with young children will probably manage fifteen minutes before restlessness sets in. The churchyard's worth a wander if the weather's decent - it's a proper snapshot of village life going back centuries.

If you're camped at Cotswold View or Cotswolds Caravan and Camping - both within a few miles - it's an easy leg-stretch before heading into Chipping Norton proper for lunch or a look around the market town. On its own, it's not a reason to plan a day trip, but as part of a Cotswolds ramble through villages, it absolutely deserves ten minutes of your time.
