St. James' Park

The path into St. James' Park winds down from the edge of Ilfracombe through woodland that feels properly separate from the seaside town just above. It's a nature reserve rather than a formal attraction - no gift shop, no visitor centre, just ground that's been left to do its thing. The park sits in a valley with a stream running through it, and the trees here are old enough that you stop noticing the outside world pretty quickly.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile. The main path is easy enough - maybe thirty minutes there and back if you're ambling - though the slopes are steeper than they first appear. Birdwatchers absolutely belong here; the woodland draws migrants and resident species that you won't clock from the promenade above. The stream is the real draw though, especially after rain when it's doing something interesting.

There's no admission fee, and no formal opening hours either - it's the kind of place you visit when it suits you. Combine it with a walk along Ilfracombe's seafront and you've got a proper half-day that covers both coast and inland green space. If you're staying at Hele Valley Holiday Park just down the road, it's practically on your doorstep. Even from Watermouth Valley or Sandaway Beach, it's a short drive worth making.

The real question is whether you're the type who enjoys woodland without facilities or interpretation boards. If quiet matters more than amenities, get down here. If you need things explained and somewhere to buy a tea afterwards, stick with the town itself.
