St James Church, Northampton

The tower of St James rises above Northampton's town centre with a sort of elegant stubbornness, visible from half a mile away. Built in the 14th century, it's one of those parish churches that rewards a proper look inside - the kind of place where you notice the light falling through old glass before you notice the crowds (because there usually aren't any).

What you're getting here is solid Perpendicular Gothic. The interior is surprisingly open and airy for a medieval church, with good clear windows and some genuinely fine tombs lining the walls.
