The sandstone tower of St James rises above Alcester's high street with the sort of understated dignity you find in proper market town churches. It's the kind of place locals walk past daily without really looking, which is precisely why it's worth stopping for.

Inside, you're met with the typical architecture of a working parish church - medieval bones under later additions, a decent roof screen, the usual patina of centuries. Nothing jaw-droppingly spectacular, but there's something grounding about standing in a space where generations have gathered for the same reasons. The light coming through the windows on a decent day lifts the mood considerably.

This works best for architecture enthusiasts and church history types rather than as a standalone attraction. You won't spend hours here - thirty minutes takes in everything properly. Free to enter, though donations are clearly appreciated. The real value comes from threading it into an Alcester wander, combining it with the town's half-decent high street and riverside walks.

If you're based at Wixford Grange or Plum Tree Glamping - both excellent spots just a couple of miles out - St James fits neatly into a morning potter around town before heading back for something more active.
