St Ippolyts Church

The church sits on a gentle rise just outside Hitchin, a solid medieval structure that's far less showy than some of its Hertfordshire neighbours. Walk through the churchyard and you'll spot the chunky tower straight away - proper Norman work, the sort of thing that's been watching over this stretch of countryside for eight centuries.

Inside, it's quiet and well-kept rather than spectacular. The chancel has some decent medieval glass and the usual carved monuments you'd expect from a working parish church. It won't eat up more than half an hour of your time, and honestly, that's the right amount for what's here.

This works best as a stop-off during a walk around the Hitchin area rather than a destination in itself. The setting is lovely though - the churchyard's the sort of place where you can actually sit on a bench without feeling rushed. If you're based at Baldock Park Homes or Radwell Lake campsite, both within five miles, it's an easy detour on your way to exploring the market town proper.

The real value is in the stop rather than the church alone. Hitchin itself has far more to keep you occupied for a day trip - decent high street, proper walking country, some good pubs. St Ippolyts works as a quiet interlude in that, a moment to step away from the bustle. Don't plan your holiday around it, but do swing by if you're in the neighbourhood.
